Pruett, Rojas Look To Make History, Close On DP Championship
Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas will be looking to make GRAND-AM Rolex Series single-season history by winning the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Aug. 28. The pair scored their seventh triumph of the 2010 campaign in the recent Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International to tie the record set by Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in 2007.
The Watkins Glen victory kicked off a unique road racing “hat trick” for Ganassi Racing last weekend, with Juan Pablo Montoya winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at The Glen and Dario Franchitti capturing the IZOD IndyCar Series race at Mid-Ohio.
Pruett and Rojas now have seven victories in 10 races co-driving the TELMEX BMW/Riley. They also finished second in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and at New Jersey Motorsports Park, with the lone blemish on their record a last-place finish at Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day following a lap-one incident.
The pair won the 2008 Daytona Prototype championship, while Pruett and Max Papis shared the 2004 championship. They enter the Montreal 200 with a 26-point lead over Ryan Dalziel, with Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli another four points back. Should the TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates drivers win at Montreal, Dalziel would need to finish fourth and Taylor/Angelelli second to remain in mathematical contention entering the season-ending Utah 250 at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City on Sept. 11.
Chip Ganassi Racing Teams Complete Historic Day with Three Victories Across Three Different Series
CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 9, 2010) – Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, Inc. celebrated a historic weekend by picking up three wins across three different series. It marked the first time Ganassi’s teams have won in all three of the series in the same weekend. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas started things off when they won the Rolex GRAND-AM Series event at Watkins Glen International on Saturday night. Then, Juan Pablo Montoya picked up a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) victory by also winning at Watkins Glen on Sunday afternoon. That win was immediately followed by Dario Franchitti completing the hat-trick with an IZOD IndyCar Series win at Mid-Ohio.
The win by Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 42 Target Chevrolet marked Target’s first NSCS win and their first-ever two-win day. The two wins were Team Target’s 84th and 85th overall wins.
· ROLEX GRAND-AM SERIES: The weekend began with Rojas and Pruett starting their No. 01 TELMEX BMW Powered Riley from the pole and then going on to pick up their fourth win in the last five races. Rojas and Pruett have dominated the series thus far in 2010 winning seven of 10 races and finishing second in two of the other three. They lead the series point standings with just two races remaining on the schedule.
· NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES: On Sunday, Montoya drove his No. 42 Target Chevrolet to a dominating victory in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. It was Montoya’s second career NSCS win in 131 starts – both coming on road courses. The win marked the first NSCS win for Target who has been a full-time sponsor in the series since 2002. Montoya started in the third position and quickly made his way to the front and would ultimately lead 74 of the 90 laps. The win was the third of the season for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates after Jamie McMurray won both the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400.
· IZOD INDYCAR SERIES: The historic day was capped off with Dario Franchitti picking up his first win since winning the 2010 Indianapolis 500 and moved closer to first place in the IZOD IndyCar Series standings, in second place just 41 points behind leader Will Power. The win marked the 78th for Team Target in Indy Car racing since their relationship began with Chip Ganassi in 1990. The victory was also Franchitti’s 25th in his career and the fourth of the season for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
· AN INTERNATIONAL FEEL: Between Pruett, Rojas, Montoya and Franchitti, they represent six championships, three Indy 500 wins, seven Rolex 24 At Daytona wins and over 100 professional victories. In addition, they represent four different countries – Pruett (United States), Rojas (Mexico), Montoya (Colombia) and Franchitti (Scotland).
· MCMURRAY CONTINUES CLIMB TOWARDS THE CHASE: With his sixth-place finish at Watkins Glen on Sunday, the 2010 Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 Winner continued his climb towards the coveted 12th position in the NSCS points standings. McMurray entered Watkins Glen in the 17th position, 172 points outside of the top 12. But, with his impressive sixth-place finish at Watkins Glen, McMurray moved up two positions to 15th, just 94 back from 12th – the cutoff for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
· GANASSI WINS TRIPLE CROWN: Earlier this month Chip Ganassi also made history by becoming the first owner to win what has become known as the American Racing Triple Crown. Ganassi’s NASCAR team picked up wins in the 52nd running of the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 with Jamie McMurray behind the wheel of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500 with Dario Franchitti in the cockpit of the No. 10 Target Honda. It was also the first time in one season that an owner has won both of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s marquee events.
· OVERALL: With 14 wins already in 2010, Chip Ganassi Racing Teams continues to add to their tally of 129 trips to victory lane. Ganassi’s teams now include two IZOD IndyCar Series entries, and along with Felix Sabates and Teresa Earnhardt he has two cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and a Daytona Prototype in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. Ganassi’s IndyCar teams have amassed seven Championships and 78 wins; his NASCAR teams have 15 wins, a trip to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and two Rookie-of-the-Year titles; and the GRAND-AM team has won three Rolex Series Daytona Prototype Championships and are an unprecedented three-time winners of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Pruett, Rojas rebound from penalty to win Daytona Grand-Am race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Only four days after having their Daytona Prototype championship points lead decimated by a 25-point penalty, Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas co-drove to victory in Saturday’s Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway, the eighth race of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season—and the 100th race in the history of the DP class.
Pruett took the lead with one hour remaining and led all but one of the remaining laps in the Chip Ganassi-owned No. 01 BMW/Riley. Pruett beat Ryan Dalziel to the checkered flag by 24.304 seconds.
The mid-week penalty, which resulted from an engine rule infraction at the series’ previous race at Mid-Ohio, had cut the Ganassi team’s lead to seven points in the battle for the DP title. Pruett and Rojas now lead Dalziel—who co-drove the No. 8 BMW/Riley with Mike Forest—by 13 points.
Ozz Negri and John Pew took third in the No. 60 Ford/Riley, their third podium finish of the season.
Andy Lally won his third race of the season in the production-based GT class, co-driving with RJ Valentine in the No. 66 TRG Porsche GT3.

Pruett, Rojas collect fifth Grand-Am win
LEXINGTON, Ohio—Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas extended their dominance of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season on Saturday, winning the EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, their fifth victory in seven 2010 races.
Rojas started from the pole in the No. 01 BMW/Riley and led twice for 26 laps in the early going, while Pruett paced the final 38 of 107 circuits in the two-hour, 45-minute race. The Chip Ganassi Racing duo also increased their lead in the Daytona Prototype championship to 32 points with five races remaining.
Ozz Negri and John Pew were second in the No. 60 Ford/Riley, 2.991 seconds behind, holding off third-place finishers Mark Wilkins and Burt Frisselle in the No. 61 Ford/Riley at the finish.
Michael Valiante and Brian Frisselle finished fourth in the No. 6 Ford/Dallara. It was the duo’s first race in that car after the team’s Riley was destroyed in a fire in the most recent Rolex Series race at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen combined to give the No. 94 BMW M6 its first victory in the production-based GT class, after missing the Watkins Glen event due to a crash in practice. It marked the first time in Rolex Series history that BMWs won both classes in the same event.
The next Rolex Series race will be the Brumos Porsche 250 on July 3 at Daytona International Speedway. That will be the 100th race in the history of the Daytona Prototype class.

Jimmie Johnson Set For Sahlen’s Six Hours Of The Glen
Four-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson is gearing up to make his second start of the 2010 season with GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and its team of two-time champion drivers Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty (No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet Riley).
The June 5 Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen will take place on the full 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International road course in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
The Sahlen’s Six Hours marks the first time Johnson has made more than one start in a season with the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team and only his second time running multiple GRAND-AM Rolex Series races in a year. The Sahlen’s Six Hour will also be Johnson’s first start in any series at The Glen’s long course that has played host to some of the greatest racecar drivers of all time since opening in the 1950s.
“I always look forward to racing with Alex, Jon and the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team,” said Johnson, who drives the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
“We’ve tried to make some things come together for other races and it’s just never worked out so I’m very excited that we were able to make this happen,” Johnson added. “I think most people know how much I want to win on a road course and also in a GRAND-AM car. It would be pretty cool if we could pull it off. I know Alex and Jon have won this race before and I hope we’re able to do it again.”
Pruett: ‘DP Debut At Lime Rock Park A Unique Opportunity’
Scott Pruett (No. 01 TELMEX BMW Riley) feels the pressure will be on all of the Daytona Prototype teams when they unload at Lime Rock Park for Monday’s Memorial Day Classic, the first event for the Rolex Series’ premier class at the 1.5-mile Connecticut circuit.
“I feel it’s going to be a unique opportunity for everyone,” said Pruett who will join co-driver Memo Rojas in the two-hour, 45-minute event. “It’s a one-day event, which means as a team you have to be ready to roll right when you come off the truck – and the Ganassi team continually shows a lot of ability in that respect.”
Pruett discounts missing the one-day special Rolex Series test at the circuit back in April, when Rojas shared the No. 01 BMW Riley with Joey Hand.
“That test was quite short because of the rain and very cold weather,” Pruett said. “So basically, no one’s been there before.”
Pruett and Rojas are looking to establish a Rolex Series record with a fourth consecutive overall victory at the event, and pad their points lead in the process.
“That would be very exciting, but at the same time we have to be smart,” Pruett said. “That’s what we’ve been doing all year, and we just have to continue doing the same thing.”
Johnson To Compete In 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona
(Grand-Am PR)
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will kick off his 2010 racing season at Daytona International Speedway in the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 30-31, the prestigious twice-around-the-clock challenge and the ultimate test of driver and machine.
For the third straight year, Johnson will co-drive the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing entry – the 2009 Rolex Series Daytona Prototype champions – with the team’s lead drivers Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty as well as open-wheel veteran Jimmy Vasser.
The 2010 Rolex 24 will be Johnson’s fifth appearance in the grueling race that kicks off the season for the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16. Johnson has a best finish of second in both the 2005 and 2008 Rolex 24s.
Johnson, the 2006 Daytona 500 champion, recently made NASCAR history by winning his fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
He could make history again in late January at Daytona by becoming the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion to also win the overall Rolex 24 title.
“It would be unbelievable,” Johnson said about winning an overall Rolex 24 title. “I’ve had such a great time with Bob (Stallings) and his entire race team. I’m really looking forward to the 24-hour race. Big compliments go out to the GAINSCO team on their championship. It was exciting to watch and an awesome battle all the way to the end and I’m very proud of the guys.
“I hope to do a better job (in 2010) in the 24. I kind of broke our toy (in 2009) after a pit stop. We had a great time. I know it’s very important for all of us to win the Rolex 24 and we’re going to show up with that in mind.”
Johnson, always a fixture at the Rolex 24, thrives on the tough competition that the race annually produces and the opportunity to drive something totally different from his NASCAR Sprint Cup car.
“To me, on a personal note, to win this race, it’s hard to say where it would rank,” Johnson said. “But it is extremely high on my list because it’s outside of my comfort zone and cars I haven’t spent a lot of time driving. I just don’t have experience in higher downforce cars. To run well and finish second in the two times I have is really special to me. Certainly hope we can win this year.”
The Rolex 24 is one of only two 24-hour sports car events in the world and attracts a star-studded driver lineup from all racing disciplines around the world.
Besides Johnson, other drivers who competed in the 2009 edition of the Rolex 24 included NASCAR stars Kurt Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya, IndyCar stars Dario Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Danica Patrick and sports car veterans David Donohue, Darren Law, Max Angelelli, Hurley Haywood and Scott Pruett.
“The Rolex 24 is an event that’s been around for ages and there’s a lot of prestige that goes with it,” Johnson said. “To me it’s in the top five of races in the world. You can lump it in with the 24 Hours At LeMans, the Daytona 500, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Brickyard. I think it’s in the top five of all racing world wide.”
The Rolex 24 also produces a festival atmosphere with plenty of activities for fans to experience such as a massive GRAND-AM autograph session, wine and cheese tasting, Chili Cook-Off, the Daytona 5K run/walk and Uncle Robbie’s Breakfast Garage.
Tickets for the Rolex 24 At Daytona are on sale along with the rest of Speedweeks events including the 52nd annual Daytona 500. To purchase tickets, go online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or call 1-800-PITSHOP.
Mark Martin Poised for Fifth Chance to Win his First Sprint Cup Championship
Throughout his career, NASCAR driver Mark Martin, of the No. 5 Kellogg’s/Carquest Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports, has had more than his fair share of disappointments.
Martin can proudly boast of having the most Nationwide series victories with 48 to go along with his astounding 148 top 10′s.
Even with all his wins and finishes, the most important piece of hardware still eluded him, with his best finish coming in 1987 when he finished eighth.
Many look at Martin as the sports most respectable driver, by the way that he carries himself whether he is having a good day or bad one.
Martin is unafraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve, despite his naturally soft-spoken persona.
With the energy level along with the intensity that NASCAR racing generates, not even cynics can explain what keeps this driver so cool and calm, especially in retrospect of all the years Martin has put behind the wheel.
Three decades of frustration should have at least put a small kink in his armor, but instead, it created a more precise, meticulous, and defined driver.
Martin already knows about disappointment, but what he understands even more is that the sport he chose to make his living from is one with no guarantees.
It is this mindset that continues to make him a fan favorite and puts him in a class almost untouchable.
Racing fans have their favorite drivers, as well as the ones that they just love to hate.
However, looking back at the remarkable career of a driver who has finished second to three of the sport’s biggest stars (Earnhardt Sr., Gordon, and Stewart) in the cup series, it is no wonder Martin’s attitude continues to shine brightly like a character out of a fairy tale.
Martin’s first disappointment came back in 1990, only a year after his first win.
With only two race left in the season, Martin was ahead of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. in the standings by a mere 45 points.
After Earnhardt’s win at Phoenix, where he finished 10th, Martin found himself six points behind the new leader. All Martin needed to do during the final race at Atlanta was to finish two places higher than Earnhardt and hope that Earnhardt would not lead a lap.
Not only did Earnhardt lead a lap, but he also finished three spots higher than Martin, giving him the championship by 26 points.
Martin was never close in 1994, when he finished 444 points behind Earnhardt who picked up his seventh and final championship.
A new era of drivers continued to make their presence felt thereafter.
Jeff Gordon won his third championship in 1998 while denying Martin his first by 364 points.
By now Martin had to be asking if he would ever get another chance, and if he did, would the fourth time be a charm? It didn’t take that long for Martin when 2002 rolled around, and he once again found himself battling for that first elusive championship.
With two races left on the schedule Martin was well within striking distance, only 112 points behind leader Tony Stewart. Martin would cut Stewarts lead to 89 points entering the last race of the season at Homestead.
But Martin would be denied a fourth time, this time falling short by 38 points after finishing fourth at Homestead while Stewart finished 18th.
When you look back, Martin’s best chance was back in 1990, and he would have won it if not for a 46-point penalty at Richmond, for using an illegal (but non-performance enhancing) carburetor spacer.
In 2009, here is Martin once again, looking at his fifth chance at possibly winning his first championship—only 73 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson with two races left.
After the race a couple of weeks ago at Talladega, Martin was looking down the barrel at a 184 point disadvantage, which has now been sliced thanks to Johnson, who wrecked on the third lap this past weekend.
Back in familiar territory, and Martin knows the feeling all too well, which should make him a threat these last two races.
If the No. 48 team happens to falter again, it’s up to Martin and the No. 5 team to take full advantage while going for the jugular.
“We can go head-to-head with them. No doubt about it. In Phoenix, we led the most laps and won the last time there, and we have no reason to think we can’t run strong at Homestead” said Martin.
Martin added, “There could still be swings in the points. There are two races left; you never know what’s going to happen. No matter what the outcome is we’ve raced our guts out and I’m so proud of this team.”
If Martin does happen to finish second for the fifth time in his career, at least he can say that he finished below some of the sports greatest drivers.
And no matter what the outcome may be, Mark Martin has accomplished what he set out to do when the season began.
“Definitely no heartbreak whatsoever. I wasn’t BS’ing you guys; I didn’t take this job to go try and get a championship trophy. I took this job, you know why, and doggone, it has worked out pretty good.”
With 29 Weeks Down, The Excitement Continues With Seven To Go
After 29 weeks of watching battle after battle, with each driver and team encountering some of the most historic race tracks in all the Motorsports world.
The excitement that is NASCAR racing will touch down in a land that is known for its mind blowing star power, while bringing its own unique form of highly energized entertainment this coming weekend.
As NASCAR’s own superstars get ready to invade a land that is rich with its own form of entertainment, nothing compares to the pageantry of watching 43 of the most famous cars in all of auto racing, as they take center stage on the two mile oval known as Auto Club Speedway.
And since Southern California is no stranger to hosting some of sports biggest playoff games, especially when the Lakers just won the NBA championship this year, and the Angels and Dodgers are in the middle of their own playoff battle.
NASCAR has also decided to bring the excitement of their own version of the playoffs to the sunny skies of Southern California, known as the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.
The chase is not some scripted made for T.V. program filmed out here in the streets of Hollywood, and its far from the make believe world that make up, “The Happiest Place on Earth” known as Disneyland.
But instead its about ten weeks of gut wrenching, heart pounding, non-scripted, and real life side by side racing action.
The chase is also about 12 hungry drivers, who are driven for the sole purpose of being crowned NASCAR’s champion for the 2009 season for three plus hours each week.
Aggression, as well as a strong desire to put all fears aside to reign as the king of the mountain, is what drives these weekend warriors to push the limits beyond any boundary that may get in their way.
So as the excitement slowly begins to fill the air, along with the smell of the 98 octane fuel that it takes to feed the 850 hungry ponies who are waiting to be unleashed once the green flag drops.
It is a time that each driver knew was near as they reach the point of no return, where there is no turning back.
The atmosphere that surrounds the track, is unlike any other sport once the rumbling begins from the sound of each car, as they meticulously hum a tune that is sweet music to the ears.
So as NASCAR racing once again invades the deepest part of the soul, it will surely go unmatched as one the most energetic, vigorous, vivacious, dynamic, and effervescent sports known to man.
Edwards, Ambrose to race Grand-Am event in Montreal
Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Aflac Ford, and Marcos Ambrose, driver of the No. 47 Clorox-Kingsford-Bush’s Best Baked Beans Toyota, will team up August 29 at Montreal during the Nationwide Series stand-alone weekend to drive the two-hour race for Doran Enterprises, Inc.’s No. 77 Ford DP car.
The car will be sponsored by Aflac, Subway, iRacing.com and Aussie wines. To prepare for their Grand-Am Series debut next week, both Edwards and Ambrose tested at Virgina International Raceway on August 18th.
“This is going to be great running in the Rolex Series in Montreal with Marcos Ambrose,” said Edwards. “This is my first time in the series and it should be exciting. We tested at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and everyone on the team is really cool and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun. Now we are battling over who’s going to do the most driving.”
Kyle Busch, Scott Speed team up for Daytona Rolex event
Chip Ganassi Racing announced today that Kyle Busch and Scott Speed will team up to drive a second entry at the July 4 race at Daytona in the Grand-Am Rolex Series.
“I am really looking forward to seeing Kyle and Scott in one of our Grand Am cars,” Ganassi said. “Kyle is one of the best racecar drivers in the world and Scott is a young talent with a lot of road course experience. Also, I think having the opportunity for them to work with a road course veteran like Scott Pruett should make for a great experience for them. It will be exciting to see what they can do.”
The two will join up with their teammates at the No. 11 driven by former champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas.
After the race, which begins at 2 p.m. ET and will be televised live on SPEED, Speed and Busch will take to the track in the Coke Zero 400 presented by Coca-Cola in the Sprint Cup Series.
