LAS VEGAS—How good is Jamie McMurray? After he won the Daytona 500, he slipped in a sponsor reference without fans and media even realizing it.

On national television following the win in NASCAR’s season-opening Sprint Cup Series race, McMurray was talking about what he and his wife did after his win last November at Talladega Superspeedway when he said: “After we won Talladega, we went to McDonald’s. I think tonight we’ll have a Big Mac.”

That might have seemed to be a nice little story, but there could have been an ulterior motive—McDonald’s will be the primary sponsor on the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing No. 1 car for 10-12 races this year, according to sources. The deal apparently was either done or all but completed by the time McMurray won the Daytona 500, sources said.

McDonald’s will be on McMurray’s car for this weekend’s Shelby American at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Bass Pro Shops is the primary sponsor for McMurray for half the season. McDonald’s was a sponsor at Richard Petty Motorsports last year.
